Adityanath, whose BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has been accused of ignoring Taj Mahal in the tourism booklet of the state, said that the monument was constructed "by the blood and sweat of Indian labourers".
On Friday, the Unesco World Heritage site came in for a fresh attack by Haryana minister Anil Vij, who referred to it as a "beautiful burial ground", a comment that comes close on the heels of UP MLA Sangeet Som's comment that the Taj Mahal was a blot on Indian culture.
Speaking to ANI, Vij said that since Taj Mahal is a cemetery, people consider it to be ominous.
Vij, while talking to a section of media said that it is true that the monument is lovely and has graves inside. While a section of the BJP saw this as an attempt by the Left party to teach the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government how to market its best-known and most-visited tourist destination, many also referred to this as the CPM's vile attempt to create a controversy.
Apart from that, BJP MP Vinay Katiyar recently said that the Taj Mahal is actually a Shiva temple.
Notably, political controversy has escalated over Taj Mahal since the Uttar Pradesh government dropped it from the booklet of its Tourism Department, drawing flak from various quarters.
The 17th century marble monument was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
At a time when Taj Mahal is enveloped in controversies; actor-turned-politician Paresh Rawal on Friday dubbed the ongoing debate in the regard as unnecessary and pathetic.
