The retired security guard told lottery officials he's been buying lottery tickets in NY and New Jersey since the 1960s but doesn't rush to see whether he's won. Much to his surprise, he'd been sitting on $24 million for almost a year. "I stood there for a minute thinking, 'Do I see what I think I see?' I had to stick my head out the window and breathe in some fresh air".
"I ended up with a pile of tickets, including the one they were talking about on the news", said Mr Smith in a profile published on the New York Lottery website.
The 68-year-old retired security officer won the jackpot for a drawing on May 25, 2016.
The New York Lottery released his name Wednesday after a review was completed. He explains he has been buying lotto tickets in New Jersey and NYC for 50 years, but that he's never in any kind of hurry to see if he's hit gold. He said he'd check them when he had sufficient energy. Once thing calm down, he says he'll have a family discussion about the money.
