Lions QB Matt Stafford (ankle, hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Saints. This is an important game for the Saints, as they will look to make up ground on both the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South.
"We need to play better at home", quarterback Drew Brees said.
The Lions injury report has no shortage of players heading into this week. The Lions defense is also dealing with a few injuries, specifically with S Glover Quinn, LB Tahir Whitehead and DE Ezekiel Ansah.
The biggest news out of the Saints camp this week was the trade that sent RB Adrian Peterson to the Arizona Cardinals for a conditional 2018 sixth round draft pick. "A year ago our defence played extremely well, got three turnovers I think, and on offence, played good enough".
For the first two games of the season, the Saints defense allowed 1,025 yards and 65 points.
If you're looking for a premier CB/WR matchup this week, look no further than the battle between Detroit CB Darius Slay and New Orleans WR Michael Thomas. That unit also probably made the key play of the game, when cornerback Ken Crawley picked off Jay Cutler in the end zone as the Dolphins threatened to take the lead. The Lions rank 26th, averaging 87.6 yards. Ameer Abdullah runs for at least 80 yards. The New Orleans Saints are the 6th worst team against RBs, giving up 373 yards rushing and 303 yards receiving to opponent RBs through their first four games. Abdullah is by far the most utilized RB for the Lions, registering 66 more carries than the next closest RB on the roster. Ill take it. The Lions are nearly always involved in a close game, and even though this game is in New Orleans, it has potential to go back and forth.
Pressure on Stafford has been a problem. We certainly have a lot to prove now being that I think that we've turned the corner this year. Peterson obviously wasn't going to be the Peterson of old, but his departure now leaves Mark Ingram to be even more primed in resuming his pass catching abilities and Alvin Kamara to step up and finally have that breakout performance that he deserves.
Drew Brees has been on fire to start the season, and with the return of WR Willie Snead, expect Brees' hot play to continue.
If any team has handled Brees well in recent years, it's Caldwell's Lions, who've beaten New Orleans in three straight meetings since 2014. He was then with the Lions past year and remembers how confident Detroit became when the defense forced the Saints into a three-and-out to open the game because it quickly quieted the crowd.
