Settlers of Catan has sold 25 million copies of the game in 38 languages.
Somehow, there are more than a few movies based upon board-games out there, such as BATTLESHIP, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, CLUE, and OUIJA, with even more on the way, and Variety reports that we may soon be adding The Settlers of Catan to that list as Sony Pictures is in negotiations to acquire the rights to adapt the hugely popular board-game series into a feature-film.
Now it looks as if Sony is planning on capitalizing on the board game's popularity and bringing it to theaters. Each settlement and city on the island moves the player one step closer to winning the game. Sony is also working closely with the producer, Gail Katz, who originally acquired the rights to the film back in 2015.
Gail Katz, whose credits include "Pawn Sacrifice", "The Perfect Storm", and "Air Force One", will produce. Their team is joined by John Eirich and together they'll be working from a script by Blaise Hemingway.
The studio is fast-tracking the project toward production with the goal of launching a possible franchise. "As huge fans of the game, we're struck by the endless possibilities of stories that it could inspire". The game board representing the island is composed of hexagonal tiles (hexes) of different land types which are laid out randomly at the beginning of each game.
Perhaps, the movie producer feels privileged by the opportunity to share " Settlers of Catan" with billions of people around the world.
