Attempted prison escape in North Carolina leaves multiple employees injured

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety tweeted around 4 p.m. that the endeavored escape occurred at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City.

The Pasquotank Sheriff's Office said they got a call announcing a conceivable escape of detainees.

The Elizabeth City- Pasquotank Public Schools said several schools had been placed on lockdown. Fire set in sewing plant.

Several employees of a North Carolina prison have been injured during an attempted inmate escape.

Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools told the station an elementary, middle and high school were placed on lockdown after an incident at a nearby jail, but the lockdown was later lifted. The gathering works a sewing plant at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution that utilizes 30 detainee specialists, the site says. Students and staff now at these schools will not be released until we hear further from Emergency Management.

"Students on buses who had not arrived home already, were brought back to the schools due to the potential of inmates being in the area and students in transport", the district said.

Elizabeth City fire crews and EMS have responded to the prison.
