The United States' failure to qualify for next year's World Cup in Russian Federation marks a "sad and dark moment" for the game in the country says former star defender Alexi Lalas.

A 2-1 loss Tuesday at Trinidad and Tobago combined with triumphs by Honduras and Panama eliminated the U.S. squad, which had not misssed a World Cup since 1986.

With questions starting to be asked as to how far the country's non-attendance in Russian Federation will impact on World Cup commercial commitments, Fox Sports - an important FIFA partner through to 2022 - issued a statement saying: "Last night's World Cup qualifying results do not change FOX Sports' passion for the world's biggest sporting event". Coach Bruce Arena couldn't improve on the frustrating Jurgen Klinsmann, and an injection of youth needs to be administered to a team of veterans, other than wunderkid Christian Pulisic. We're building a consistent professional league.

Many will enjoy the schadenfreude at play here as the network were awarded the 2026 World Cup TV rights without even having to bid for them - a gift from Federation Internationale de Football Association after the broadcast company bent over backwards to help move the 2022 World Cup to the winter despite the bid guidelines clearly stating it would be a summer tournament. As for the players we thank them and will always be behind them in the stands. And while this is a missed opportunity for soccer in the United States, we remain incredibly bullish on the future of the sport.

Gulati, who took over as USSF president in 2006, will be up for re-election in February.

Following the loss, Gulati did not seem committed to tear everything down.

"The blame must be placed squarely at the feet of US Soccer's management, led by Sunil Gulati", Commisso said in a statement.

'Certainly, I think if our league [the MLS] continues to grow it benefits the national team program, ' Arena told reporters Tuesday. We have some good players coming up.

But Rocco Commisso, the New York Cosmos chairman with an anti-trust lawsuit against US Soccer, joined the chorus of disapproval. After Friday's 4-0 victory over Panama, the usa looked certain to continue its record of reaching the World Cup finals-it hasn't missed a tournament since 1986.

"The US (men's team) has never come close to achieving worldwide prominence as it should, given our country's size, resources and huge pool of athletic talent". "We'll look at everything". It's on and I'm going to bring it up right now: The gloves should have been off years ago.

Twellman finished his MLS career with 130 goals in 232 games, adding another six goals in 30 games over a seven-year stretch with the U.S. National Team.
