Iran 'successfully' launches ballistic missile

Iran's Khoramshahr missile is displayed by the Revolutionary Guard during a military parade marking the 37th anniversary of Iraq's 1980 invasion of Iran in front of the shrine of late revolutionary founder Ayatollah Khomeini just outside Tehran Iran F

In defiance to US, Iran unveils latest missile during parade

"We are going to strengthen our military capabilities which are necessary for deterrence", Rouhani said at the event, in remarks relayed by the semi-official FARS news agency.

President Donald Trump gave a stark warning Saturday that cast growing uncertainty over whether a nuclear deal clinched with Iran would survive after the Islamic republic tested a new medium-range missile. "When it comes to defending our country, we will ask nobody for their permission", President Hassan Rouhani said. "Iran is sending another signal of defiance taken straight from the North Korean textbook", BBC analyst Kasra Naji says.

The test comes at the end of a heated week of diplomacy at the UN General Assembly in NY, where US President Donald Trump again accused Iran of destabilizing the Middle East, calling it a "rogue state whose chief exports are violence, bloodshed and chaos".

Iran has agreed to limit its nuclear weapons program, but it says the missiles it has been testing are not created to carry nuclear warheads.

Previous Iranian missile launches have triggered USA sanctions and accusations that they violate the spirit of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Twitter the missile test illustrates the weakness of the Iran nuclear deal reached by his predecessor Barack Obama.

Tehran is not pursuing construction of its existing heavy water research reactor and has not enriched uranium above the agreed 3.67-percent limit, the report concluded, adding that Iran's stockpile of low-enriched uranium (which can be used for peaceful purposes unless further processed for a nuclear weapon) was 101.7kg - considerably lower than the agreed level of 300kg.

"It is also a means to test our reactions as well as new proof of Iran's ambition to become a world power in order to threaten the countries of the Middle East and democratic states around the world".

Iran has successfully test-fired a new long-range ballistic missile that can carry several warheads to hit multiple targets, local media reported. "We will defend the downtrodden people of Yemen, Syria, and Palestine whether you like it or not", Rouhani added.

In Syria, Iran is a close ally of President Bashar Assad.

Mr Trump said this week he has reached a decision on the nuclear deal, but hasn't revealed what it is. It included video from an on-board camera which it said showed the detachment of the cone that carries multiple warheads.

Iran says it has no such plans.

The Iranian armed forces remembered the 1980-1988 war between Iraq and Iran by holding a parade in which Iran's most advanced military power and abilities are showcased.
