Red Velvet was mentioned briefly by Bill Maher on the September 15 airing of his HBO show ' Real Time with Bill Maher'.

Jerry Brown signed a climate agreement with China to work on reducing emissions, Maher said that conservatives "can't complain" when liberal states refuse orders from the federal government.

He added that conservatives can't complain when California cities threaten "to deny contracts to any firm that helps build the border wall". "Now the white supremacists are the federal government and it's liberal states that are under siege from federal overreach".

"It's just now that we're the state that wants to be left alone", Maher continued.

"We're trying to defend our way of life here, and what we believe in", Maher explained as he was greeted with a loud applause from the audience. "We believe in sanctuary cities and pollution controls and legalized pot and gun control and ObamaCare and a woman's right to choose - and we're going to defend 'em". "We're the rebels now!" "We are the rebels now, and now we get to talk like dis!" Early into his monologue, Maher says how things are back to normal after Hurricanes Irma and Harvey - now all we have to worry about is "Sh-tstorm Trump".

Maher compared Mississippi's defiance of Attorney General Bobby Kennedy's call for desegregation in the 1960s to states now fighting against Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who, among other controversial moves, is attacking affirmative action. "And in our state, we use Tiki torches the way they're supposed to be used - for lesbian weddings on the beach".
