Following the announcement that J.J. Abrams will be taking over directing duties for "Star Wars 9", Disney also revealed that the release date for the film has been pushed back to December 20, 2019 - a significant shift from its intended May 2019 release.
Disney announced Abrams return on Tuesday. Abrams is a producer, writer and director with plenty of Hollywood tentpole street cred.
December 2015: The Force Awakens is released.
It will be a return to the Star Wars universe for the director, who oversaw the launch of the new era of the film series in 2015 when he directed The Force Awakens. If The Force Awakens had been a failure, we'd probably be looking at a very different Star Wars movie scenario right now rather than the Golden Age of yearly films that we're getting.
The film will be the third in the new Star Wars trilogy that continues the space-faring saga created by George Lucas, who turned over control of the franchise to Disney as part of that studio's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012.
"Episode IX" was the second "Star Wars" project to lose a director this year.
Yes, Abrams was a "safer" pick by Kathleen Kennedy, the Lucasfilm president.
Force Friday is, next to the release of the actual film, one of the most looked forward to days for Star Wars fans.
A week after Trevorrow's departure, however, they have already signed on the director of the next mainline Star Wars movie: J. J. Abrams.
Hitting theaters on December 15, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will also star Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran. Not long now. I hope that Disney knows what they are doing, but I suspect that more watered down Star Wars is coming our way. Episode IX is scheduled to be released in May 2019. In fact, the latter soon seemed to be the clear favourite. Seeing how Terrio had maintained the tension of Tony Mendez's heroic rescue, while handling the worldwide repercussions of those actions, fans can expect Episode IX to be an unique edge-of-the-seat thriller, instead of the grand space opera that #StarWars has been known for.
