School officials thought it was good to postpone classes after Hurricane Irma forced many to evacuate from the Suncoast region and also caused widespread flooding and wind damage to homes in the area.
All Central Florida school districts are closed today. Currently, 66 local schools remain without electricity, though efforts to remedy that are ongoing. Rick Scott ordered all public K-12 schools, colleges, universities and state offices to close Friday through Monday in anticipation of Irma.
"Some of the older facilities sustained damage, some neighborhoods are without power and some are flooded", said Superintendent Ann Levett.
Part of the Savannah-Chatham Public Schools bus fleet was used to transport evacuees to shelters in Augusta. Custodians are asked to return to work Tuesday and other staff on Friday. Additional cleanup time is needed as a result of the storm, according to the release. "We want to make sure our families have time to recover and get back to some sense of normalcy".
I am happy to share that we will reopen schools and resume classes on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017.
