'Racism is as American as baseball' sign hangs at Fenway

This time, the catalyst was a couple fans who unfurled a banner reading "Racism is as American as baseball", on the Green Monster - the popular and enormous left field wall at Fenway.

According to reports from the stadium, umpires gathered with security to discuss the banner and it was quickly removed. McCaffrey said the banner hung for about a minute before security came and pulled it off and also removed three people who had hung it.

More recently, Red Sox owner John Henry told the Boston Herald in August that he planned to lead a movement to rename Yawkey Way due to former owner Tom Yawkey's reputation for racial intolerance.

In May, Baltimore Orioles center fielder Adam Jones had racial slurs hurled at him from fans sitting in the outfield.
