In a pre-recorded section for the Hand in Hand pledge drive on Tuesday night (Sept. 12), Selena Gomez related the tale of the Saldivar family - whose van was submerged in the surges of Hurricane Harvey - getting unmistakably passionate while describing the bad occasions. Selena was named after the singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, and the Sandivar family were her relatives.
During Selena's pre-recorded message she was visibly upset and it was apparent that the story hit close to her heart.
Selena Gomez was born in Grand Prairie, Texas and shared the story of the Saldivar family who tragically lost their lives when their van was submerged in flood waters due to Hurricane Harvey. "Their van is swept into the bayou, only Sammy Saldivar manages to survive", she said in the clip above as she got choked up.
Gomez continued: "Ricardo Saldivar has spoken out about his brother's escape and what happened to his beloved family". Sammy Saldivar, who was driving the van, made it out alive. Their story affected all who heard it, and no matter who we are, the differences we have suddenly did not seem to matter. "Since that day, we have joined together".
The Washinton Post reported on the Saldivar family after the storm. That's what he keeps hearing in his head. You can also donate online at handinhand2017.com.
