AIADMK sacks Sasikala ejects Gen Secy post

It may be recalled that Mr Palaniswami was removed from his another post of Salem Suburban District Secretary last month following the merger of Mr Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam factions.

Chennai: AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran on Wednesday relieved more top functionaries, including Chief Minister K Palaniswami from their respective party posts.

The former deputy secretary general also said that MLAs are supporting the ruling faction due to a fears created regarding facing early elections. "It is unanimously resolved to cancel her appointment made on December 29,2016".

Originally, this rule had mentioned that though the general council would have powers to frame, amend or delete any rule of the party constitution, the stipulation that the general secretary should be elected only by all the primary members of the party "cannot be changed or amended" since it formed the basic structure of the party. Showing the door to Sasikala, the meeting unanimously declared that all appointments made by her, including that of naming her nephew Dhinakaran as Deputy General Secretary, was invalid.

Citing the resolution that stated that party members can not visualise anybody other than Jayalalithaa as general secretary, Dhinakaran wondered if the same logic would also apply to the chief minister's post. This power has been now transferred to party Coordinator and Joint Coordinator following the amendments to the rules.

The change heralds a new chapter in the history of the 45-year-old AIADMK, which has functioned as per the diktats of a single leader, be it founder M.G. Ramachandran or his successor Jayalalithaa.

The meeting was called by E Palaniswami, and attended by O Panneerselvam and other members of the council. The coordinator and co-coordinator would be joint signatories of authorisation forms to be submitted to the Election Commission.

Out of almost 2,300 members of the general council, 90% took part in the meeting, sources in the party claimed.

Sasikala, among others, named Dhinakaran as Deputy General secretary and reinstated S Venkatesh, another relative in the party, before surrendering in a Bengaluru court on February 15 following her conviction in a graft case.

In another major move, Mr Dhinakaran removed Forest Minister Dindigul C Srinivasan from his post as party treasurer.

Referring to the Madras High Court's order that decisions taken at today's General Council will be subject to the final outcome of an appeal on the matter, he said only then will it be known if the ouster of Sasikala was 'valid. In August, the factions led by Palaniswamy and Panneerselvam had merged.

With the annulment of the appointment of Dinakaran as Deputy General Secretary, the appointments made by him are also struck down.
