With Bryan Bulaga not playing against the Seahawks and perhaps out for this Sunday night's game against Atlanta, Pankey gives Green Bay a little insurance along the offensive line.
To make way for Allison on the 53-man roster, the Packers waived Gunter according to the NFL's transaction wire.
Pankey, a 6-foot-5, 313-pound rookie out of West Virginia, was originally signed by the Packers as an undrafted free agent on May 5. He finished the regular season with 202 yards and two touchdowns. That's the reason he went undrafted and why he was passed on the depth chart this year.
Jean Francois signed with the Packers as a free agent on March 24 and appeared in the season opener versus Seattle.
Additionally, wide receiver Geronimo Allison was activated from exempt status. Allison was suspended for the first game for a violation of the league's substance abuse policy in 2016.
The Green Bay Packers released defensive tackle Ricky Jean Francois, the team announced on Wednesday.
Jean Francois signed with the team in the off-season for one year at $2 million. Once it becomes official, the Packers will have an open roster spot.
