North Korea is thought to have developed a miniaturized warhead, and a more advanced intercontinental ballistic missile, that would enhance its ability to deliver a nuclear payload against the U.S.
But the intelligence chief also said he saw no imminent threat of North Korea attacking the USA with such a nuclear weapon, although he expected the rogue nation's missile program would continue despite global sanctions.
Still, he said Americans shouldn't be alarmed.
"What I believe the president is trying to accomplish this week was to give the Venezuelan people hope and opportunity to create a situation where democracy can be restored", Pompeo said.
He said the USA has a "pretty good idea" of North Korea's intentions, but he declined to provide specifics.

North Korea, for its part, threatened to shoot four missiles towards the island of Guam, a strategic outpost of the u.s. forces in the Pacific, where are stationed about 6,000 american soldiers.
A Chinese state-run newspaper said on Friday that China should remain neutral if North Korea launches an attack that threatens the United States, sounding a warning for Pyongyang over its plans to fire missiles near Guam.
