Stroud won on the PGA Tour for the first time last week at the Barracuda Championship, outlasting Greg Owen and Richy Werenski in a playoff to earn the final spot in the field at Quail Hollow. Of the 15 players under par who have completed the second round, Kang is the only one with two rounds in the 70s.
He chose not to try to hit over a line of trees, instead choosing the low route, down the cart path.
"I hit the driver really good", Johnson said.
"That could have been a six or seven quite easily".
"I've got to make up ground". If he had finished his round at 4 over - that would have required one birdie and two pars - the cut would have gone to 4 over and eliminated Adam Scott, Charles Howell III and Kevin Chappell. I am trying not to compound errors and it was good today, but this was the first tournament since we worked on that aspect in the last couple of weeks. That's saying something. Birkdale [the British Open venue] is a pretty special place. It landed just off of the green.
Stroud, ranked 203rd, resumed in the greenside rough at the par-4 fifth hole, chipped to seven feet and sank the par putt.
The round was in stark contrast to his opening four-over 75, where two early birdies were swamped by four bogeys and a double-bogey on the closing nine. If he can find this zone this weekend, where bad tee shots still find the middle of the fairway, and bad irons are still in birdie range, there isn't anyone in the world who can stop him.
"I like to think that I'm mature now and I can manage an under-par round when I don't have my best stuff", Thomas said.
Of his first round, Lahiri said, "Frankly I played solid but it was only in the second nine (front nine of the course) that I got going. Those were costly mistakes, because otherwise the way I played I should have been in red numbers". I probably didn't quite hit it as well off the tee as I did yesterday and wasn't putting myself in positions where I could go at a lot of pins.
He can count on two FedEx Cup playoff events, but he'll probably have to show some form to advance through the PGA Tour's postseason and, more importantly to him, give U.S. captain Steve Stricker a reason to pick him for the Presidents Cup.
For the longest time, the PGA Championship looked as though it might be a case of survival at Quail Hollow.
Defending champion Jimmy Walker of the United States had a miserable day on Thursday, shooting a 10-over 81.
