Gujarat RS poll: Sharad Yadav says Election Commission showed 'brilliant judgment'

Apart from Sharad Yadav, two JD-U Rajya Sabha MPs - Ali Anwar Ansari and Virender Kumar - have also voiced their opposition to Nitish Kumar's decision to join hands with the BJP.

Soon after a top leader of his party, KC Tyagi, said Mr Vasava had voted for the BJP. However the MLA himself did not make it clear and said he had voted for the nation.

His congratulatory message to Patel assumes significance at a time, when the JD (U) has joined hands with the BJP to form the government in Bihar. "But Vaghela betrayed Ahmed Patel during polling", the source said.

BJP whip in the Assembly Pankaj Desai, meanwhile, said that all BJP MLAs, including doubtful Nalin Kotadiya who had claimed on social media on Tuesday that he voted for Ahmed Patel, had cast their vote in favour of BJP candidates. Who is Tyagi to say anything. "Our support is with Ahmed Patel", said Mr Jadhav.

After he lost to Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav from the Madhepura Lok Sabha seat in 2014, the JD (U) had sent Yadav to the Upper House of Parliament previous year. State Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki said the party is also studying the option of initiating legal action against them to bar them from contesting elections for six years.

He also hit out at Nitish Kumar, upset that he "did not even discuss with us" the decision to partner with the BJP in Bihar.

Patel won dramatically by a vote against the BJP on Tuesday. Last night, the JD (U) had sacked Arun Shrivastav, considered a close confidante of Yadav, from the post of party general secretary for "unauthorisedly" writing to the Returning Officer of Gujarat Assembly appointing an election agent for the crucial Rajya Sabha election there. However, Kumar has been facing heat from Sharad Yadav, his senior colleague and leader of the parliamentary party in the Rajya Sabha.
