An soldier was killed and four others injured on Saturday in an ongoing gunfight between the security forces and militants holed-up in a village in Kashmir's Shopian district, officials said. "Following which gunfight erupted", a senior police officer said.
Police strongly denied rumours that a mosque was damaged during the gunfight between the security forces and the militants.
Security forces are conducting searches as two to three terrorists are believed to be hiding in the village. "We are unable to retrieve the body as the firing is underway from the both sides".
As such the joint team was moving towards the target area, the militants in a bid to break the cordon fired upon them, triggering off a fierce encounter.
The injured were shifted to SDH hospital Yaripora and District Hospital Kulgam for treatment.
Separately, in north Kashmir's Bandipora, two policemen were wounded when they were shot by suspected militants, and a civilian succumbed to his injuries from a petrol bomb attack in Srinagar. The Army quickly launched a search operation in the area but no arrests were made, the police sources said.
