Philadelphia 76ers take Fultz with top pick in NBA draft

The Philadelphia 76ers picked Washington point guard Markelle Fultz with the top overall pick in Thursday's NBA Draft.

"Once I heard my name called it was like God calling me", he said. ". I've been through a lot growing up, and I'm looking forward to coming here and giving it my all".

The performance at Washington capped a meteoric rise on the amateur level for Fultz. It's the fourth time the Sixers have had the top pick in the draft. "I feel like I can go at anybody", he said. Markkanen is a 7-foot forward from the University of Arizona.

The Celtics could have left draft night with Fultz or put together a package for Butler, but instead walked away with Tatum and a ton of future draft picks they'll have trouble finding room for on the roster.

"That morning I woke up, I didn't know where I was going", Fultz said.

How it affects the Sixers: If the Celtics had any interest in Butler, who could've theoretically helped them inch closer to Cleveland in the East, I'm very surprised they weren't able to beat Minnesota's offer.

Joel Embiid, as always, stole the show, dubbing the Sixers star quartet the "FEDS" (Fultz, Embiid, Dario, Simmons), and taking a not-so-subtle shot at Lonzo and his father Lavar.

Of course the conversation didn't just stay on the topic of the draft picks. Fultz bringing his high-scoring ability to the table will only mean more assists for an already excellent passer like Simmons.

In the National Basketball Association draft's first unscripted moment, the Boston Celtics took Jayson Tatum of Duke with the third pick.

The Sixers might have to be patient again because Fultz and Simmons will not only be learning how to play together but will also be doing so while playing their first National Basketball Association minutes ever, after Simmons missed all of last season with a foot injury. It became even more apparent the Lakers were going to select him once D'Angelo Russell was traded to Brooklyn for Brook Lopez.

Tatum, who just completed his freshman year, averaged 16.8 points and 7.3 rebounds in 29 games for the Blue Devils. He and McNeely are the only two No. 1 picks to never play an National Basketball Association game. They later traded the rights to Collins to the Trail Blazers for North Carolina's Justin Jackson (selected with the No. 15 pick) and the 20th pick.

Chicago made the choice of trading away Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Kris Dunn and Zach LaVine.

After dominating Big Ten play, Hayes went undrafted, but ended up signing a contract with the New York Knicks. Charlotte Hornets - Malik Monk 12.

Fox is considered by several scouts as one of the best in the draft thanks to being the fastest in the draft and how he attacks every time he has the ball. Another sophomore followed Kennard when Donovan Mitchell was selected out of Louisville by Denver at No. 13, but was then dealt to Utah in a trade that sent Trey Lyles to Denver. They have filled out their guard positions, which has been thin for the past few seasons and they did so with two young, athletic and explosive players. All but Ntilikina are college freshman, and they are part of a draft class that is expected to break the record for freshman selected in a single year, surpassing last year's record-setting total of 14. Orlando Magic (proposed trade: rights to 76ers) - Anzejs Pasecniks 26.

The Los Angeles Lakers have the second pick again and the Celtics moved down two spots to third after the deal with their Atlantic Division rivals.

The Bulls also held the 38th pick in the second round.
