Trump appears willing to test the bounds of convention and his own powers against a legal and political establishment that he believes is conspiring against him.
But it gets even more confusing. A chilling detail for the White House from the prosecution team - the combined CVs of Mueller's team have experience on everything from al-Qaeda to Richard Nixon and gangsters.
But the sense of chaos around the White House is deepening.
And so, investigators will likely try to determine whether Trump indicated in that meeting that he'd already made his decision, and indicated to them his reason for it, in effect enlisting them in an effort to create a cover story for the firing.
The irony is that the inquiries into Russian meddling in the election, and the contacts between Trump campaign officials and Russians, were encouraged by many Republicans in Congress at the outset.
James Quarles, an assistant special prosecutor on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force, donated more than 10 times to Democratic PAC's over the last 30 years, for presidential candidates Michael Dukakis, Al Gore, John Kerry and Hillary Clinton. Press secretary Sean Spicer denied it was a travel "ban"; Trump tweeted it was a ban. The source said investigators have sought information from Richard Ledgett, who recently retired as deputy NSA director and, the source said, had written a memo documenting an attempt from Trump urging Rogers to tamp down on the FBI's Russian Federation investigation.
"You're his lawyer", Kilmeade told him.
The scorched-earth approach may have grave political consequences.
Clearly, Trump is exasperated over what he sees as much ado about nothing. "That's the constitutional threshold question here".
Back in the present, the President's mood is fueling the sense of crisis.
Is the president being investigated?
But Sekulow on Sunday said that Trump did not mean what he appeared to saying the message.
Some of Sekulow's exchanges with Wallace were tense and confusing, leading Wallace to say, "Oh boy, this is weird". I don't tell him what to write or not write. "And he's expressing himself in that way". The White House used a memo he wrote to justify Trump's decision to fire Comey, but Trump's firing of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director may now be part of the probe.
Asked last week if he was open to investigating the White House on questions of obstruction of justice, Grassley did not rule it out.
"The President is not a subject or target of an investigation".
"It was 141 characters".
When the host noted that Sekulow had just twice said the president is under investigation, the attorney insisted otherwise. Mueller operates with day-to-day independence of Rosenstein, but Rosenstein still oversees how the investigation is funded.
A source familiar with the matter told CNN's Evan Perez that investigators for Mueller would speak with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers. Yes, Trump abhors the selective leaks that have poured out of these investigations; he resents the false narrative that has been spun based on mere innuendo and often on inaccurate and sloppy reporting; and he strongly and rightly defends himself and his closest advisors from baseless accusations.
