The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers have officially completed a blockbuster trade that sends the No. 1 overall pick in this week's National Basketball Association draft from Boston to Philadelphia. General Manager Bryan Colangelo had positive words on Monday afternoon in a press conference confirming the trade between the two rivaled organizations.
The Celtics will receive the Los Angeles Lakers' 2018 first-rounder if it falls between Nos. The Celtics could pull the trigger on some of these first round picks to bring Butler, one of the best two way players in the National Basketball Association, to Boston with a starting lineup that already features Isaiah Thomas, Avery Bradley, and Al Horford. Either option would add much needed size to the Celtics, but would potentially create another overabundance of wings on the roster. It's worth questioning why the C's made the trade now for a protected pick rather than sweating out Philly a longer to see if they'd trade the pick without any strings attached.
Boston also owns the unprotected 2018 Brooklyn Nets pick, which could land near the top of the lottery. "In a sense, we're using house money".
Terms of the deal were agreed upon Saturday night after Fultz conducted a workout for the 76ers. It's no secret that the love affair the team has with him is mutual.
Ainge said Monday that he believes the player the Celtics would have selected with the No. 1 on Thursday will be there when the team picks at No. 3.
"I am incredibly excited that we've acquired the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday's National Basketball Association draft", 76ers managing general partner Josh Harris said. "He's super explosive. He's super talented". "He can shoot. I thought (in college) he could do everything offensively". "I think they're both terrific talents". He shot 41.3 percent from 3-point range at Washington, and the 76ers need a shooter. The 76ers have a rookie of the year contender, in Joel Embiid, a former number on selection in Ben Simmons who missed all of last year with a foot injury, and Fultz as the newcomer. This past season, they had one of the best records in the league and were able to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, but appear to be a couple players away from getting any further.
"I think January gave everyone a taste of what success feels like", Colangelo said.
Colangelo chose not to disclose a name, but Fultz is the consensus No. 1 pick of the draft.
Griffin's departure comes three days before the draft - the Cavs are now without a pick - and on the eve of free agency.
Colin Ward-Henninger of CBS Sports also reported there is a chance that the Celtics will receive a 2021 first round pick.
