On Thursday, officials said the two men were in custody following a vehicle chase in rush hour traffic through Rutherford County, Tennessee.

The sheriff said within two hours of the fatal shooting, he had warrants for both men for murder charges. And with help from a neighbor, held the two escapees at gunpoint.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles says police in Shelbyville, Tennessee, got a call about a home invasion Thursday.

The two men, who were serving time for armed robbery, escaped on Tuesday in rural Putnam County, about 70 miles southeast of Atlanta, as they were being transported between two prison facilities with 31 other inmates.

"We are relieved to know that these two risky individuals have been taken off the streets, and the public is out of harm's way", said Commissioner Greg Dozier. "I have their blood on my shoes".

At about 5:30 p.m., the accused killers left in the couple's Jeep Cherokee and threatened they would be back if the couple didn't make up a story about what happened.

As word of the inmates' escape spread, photos of the two men emerged on social media.

Rowe and Dubose were finally taken alive. The fugitives ditched the Honda Civic and their prison uniforms, ransacked a home and then stole a Ford pickup truck in Madison, Georgia, later Tuesday. "We need the eyes and ears of everybody really in this country to be on the lookout for these two individuals", Sills said Thursday. "This is a rock quarry-type place".

The pair were driving 33 inmates between prisons when Rowe and Dubose overpowered them and then used the their own guns to kill them about 6.45am on Tuesday, authorities have said.

Around noon, Bedford County Sheriff Austin Swing said an abandoned auto was found on a highway that appeared to be covered up with branches.

Without a auto, Rowe and Dubose walked up a hill and reached a home in Shelbyville, about 30 miles from the Georgia -Tennessee border. She says Donnie Russell Rowe and Ricky Dubose held an elderly couple captive and then fled in the couple's vehicle.

The men were ultimately taken into custody at a home on Pruitt Road after a foot pursuit.

The escapees tied the man up with a belt and put socks on his hands so that he could not use his fingers, the sheriff said.

The men originally planned to have the woman drive them somewhere in her auto, but when she got in, the vehicle wouldn't start. The ensuing foot chase shut down Interstate 24, about 10 miles south of Murfreesboro. One victim had broken free, but was tied up again, Swing said. The inmates eventually crashed in Christiana, Tennessee and ran into the woods. Some police cars followed them while others stayed back blocking the highway. In Tennessee yesterday, they led police on a 10-mile auto chase that ended in a wreck and gunshots.

Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Bill Miller said a homeowner in Christiana was alerted that people were outside his home and he saw the men trying to steal his vehicle.

"I can't say enough about the bravery of the homeowner, and what they took on, the wherewithal to call us and give us the information so we could get over there and apprehend these two subjects", Fitzhugh said.

The prisoners breached a protective gate on the bus to reach the officers at the front of the bus, before disarming and killing them both, the sheriff's office said.
