Dodd approached her pastor and suggested that fathers should have a holiday similar to Mother's Day to honour them.
A Father's Day celebration was first held at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd. The first Father's Day was marked on June 19 1910 and was founded by an American woman, Sonora Smart Dodd.
"I began thinking of my mother, who passed away in 1898 while I was yet a child". As a child, she and her five brothers were raised by their widower father.
Sonora Smart Dodd's tomb identifies her as the founder of Father's Day.
"We're going to have a good Father's Day, we all get together and have a great time, it's a great time of the year". In the years that followed, Father's Day grew to become an global event and Dodd lived to see President Richard Nixon declare it an official USA holiday in 1972.
However its celebrated, 47 ABC would like to wish a Happy Father's Day to all those dads out there. "But to single out just one of our two parents and omit the other is the most grievous insult imaginable". President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of the day in 1972.
