Adam West, Iconic Star Of TV's 'Batman,' Has Died

He died peacefully on Friday night after a "short but fearless battle with leukaemia", a family statement read on West's official Facebook page.

"A friend called me up this morning and said to me with tears in his voice, that Adam West was the father that we wanted", she said. Given that you can not have Adam West the Mayor without Adam West the person, the character should be retired.

In recent years there have been several A-list Hollywood actors who followed West in the Batman role, including Val Kilmer, Christian Bale, George Clooney, and Ben Affleck. He reprised his role as Batman many times, from SuperFriends: The Legendary Super Powers Show (1984) to The Simpsons (2002).

West remained a working actor until his death, doing recurring voice work for animated projects including Family Guy - in which he played himself - and Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders. I will miss him in the physical world and savour him always in the world of imagination and creativity.

"I will forever miss him", Ward said.

The 71-year-old actor remembered his Batman co-star and lifelong friend, Adam West, in a touching statement to ET on Saturday. Additionally, he and Batman co-star Burt Ward reprised their roles as Batman and Robin for the animated movie, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders which was released on video previous year. The show's campy aesthetic transformed it into an unexpected cultural phenomenon, with some of the highest ratings of any mid-'60s TV series and a spinoff movie released in 1966.

While that character forever typecasted West's acting career, he would later embrace the acting role, reprising his role as Batman and often playing parodies of the character.

West was due to appear at the London Film and Comic Con next month.

West, who passed away peacefully, is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
