Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition following surgery to fix injuries sustained after he was shot at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday, hospital officials announced in a statement on Thursday evening.
A single rifle wound caused "substantial damage" to Scalise's internal organs and blood loss, his doctor explained Friday.
"The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time." the Medstar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement, adding that Scalise has "improved in the last 24 hours".
"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said.
Even with lawmakers' determination for baseball bipartisanship, they say competitiveness remains. Two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, were among those wounded in Wednesday's attack.
Law enforcement officials identified the shooter as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, who later died from injuries sustained during a shootout with police on the scene.
"To the extent that people think this is just a game, they're wrong", Richmond told reporters Thursday.
"By playing tonight you are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults", Trump said. While the original plan to honor Scalise, organized by the office of Kansas Rep. Roger Marshall, included purchasing LSU t-shirts for members of the congressional baseball teams to wear at the game, the order did not ship in time, according to a tweet from Marshall's press secretary Eric Pahls.
Jennifer Scalise says in a statement that the family is "especially appreciative of the strong outpouring of love and support from our neighbors, friends, from Louisiana and across the country".
Scalise, who underwent a third surgery Thursday, is listed in critical condition after being shot through the hip. The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media. That's why Democrats' and Republicans' decision to go ahead with their baseball game was so welcome.
House Speaker Paul Ryan has paid a visit to wounded Majority Whip Steve Scalise at the hospital. One person who won't be among them: President Trump. Hospital staff told CBN News he will likely undergo more surgeries.
On Friday, Bailey was spotted back in the Capitol building, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.
