Flames engulfed stacked mattresses and have spread to cars parked nearby.

A massive fire is burning on Mitchell Island, a small island on the Fraser River, between Richmond and Vancouver.

NEWS 1130 has been taking numerous phone calls about a major fire that is burning on Mitchell Island. "Sure enough, we look over, the whole sky was just full of black smoke".

Smoke and flames from the fire can be seen from several kilometres away. It is not known what sparked the blaze, but fortunately, workers were able to get out quickly when it started to grow. "The incident is ongoing, and cause at this time is unknown".

Knight Street Bridge has reopened after being temporarily closed but Richmond RCMP are warning commuters to expect heavy delays.

Chief John McGowan said he has received reports that say access to the island is limited and first responders are working on getting people out of the area. No other businesses in the area were affected by the fire.

The business next door was evacuated as more than two dozen firefighters battled the blaze.
