The San Francisco Giants ace sprained the AC joint in his left shoulder and suffered bruised ribs in a dirt bike crash on the team's off day Thursday, the team announced.
The left-hander, who nearly single-handedly took down the Mets in last year's NL Wild Card game, suffered bruised ribs along with an AC sprain in his pitching shoulder, although surgery at this time is likely unnecessary.
Bumgarner, a 4-time All-Star and the MVP of the 2014 World Series, was injured in a dirt bike accident Thursday during the Giants' off day in Denver. He's been released from the hospital and is resting in the team's hotel. Bumgarner is 0-3 with a 3.00 ERA and 28 strikeouts with four walks in 27 innings this season.
FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal tweeted shortly after the team's announcement that Bumgarner is expected to miss the next six to eight weeks of the season. In his first six full Major League Baseball season, the lefty has made at least 31 starts and exceeded the 200 innings threshold each year, although that looks unlikely to continue.
