Tillerson Meets With Chinese President To Wrap Up Asia Trip

China's President Xi Jinping meets US State of Secretary, Rex Tillerson at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, March 19, 2017.

The 24-hour tour by Tillerson, who had also visited Japan and South Korea earlier in the week, took place against a backdrop of continuing volatility surrounding North Korea, which announced that it had performed a test of a high-thrust rocket engine that could become a component of an inter-continental ballistic missile capable of reaching United States shores.

Trump has accused China of unfair trade practices and currency manipulation, harming the U.S. economy.

"And he looks forward to enhancing that understanding in the opportunity for a visit in the future", Tillerson said. "China has done little to help!" tweeted Trump in response. And that was emphasized today when North Korea, in state media, reported that they had just tested a new high-thrust rocket engine, which could be used on such a missile.

He added that the President of the United States places a "very high value on the communications that have already occurred" between Xi and Trump.

Neither Tillerson nor Wang elaborated what steps are under consideration and it's still unclear whether Washington and Beijing see eye to eye on the issue.

But he has since backed down and affirmed longstanding USA policy that the democratic island is part of a united China - a major victory for the Communist nation, which considers the issue unassailable.

Mr Xi and Mr Trump had resolved in a phone call last month "to make joint efforts to advance China-US cooperation, and we believe that we can make sure the relationship will move ahead in a constructive fashion in the new era", Mr Xi said. Further, Trump said that the "One China" policy was not sacrosanct and was open to new realignments, like with new trade deals.

China has never renounced the use of force to take back what it deems a wayward province and has been pressuring Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, who leads an independence-leaning ruling party, to concede Taiwan is a part of China.

The US has been pressing China to do more to rein in North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes, including imposing tougher sanctions on North Korea.

He also endorsed the "One China" policy, which has governed delicate relations between the United States, China and Taiwan for decades - after questioning its legitimacy shortly after his election.

A declaration by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that Washington would consider pre-emptive military action against North Korea raises a question that has dogged US military planners for 20 years: How could this be made to work?

During the discussions Yang suggested that Trump host Xi at Mar-a-Lago, his palatial estate in Palm Beach, according to multiple sources in both capitals with knowledge of the discussions.

North Korea has a long-standing ambition to become a nuclear power and conducted its first underground atomic test in 2006, in the teeth of global opposition.

Cooperation is the right option for both nations, the Chinese president said after recognizing that there are significant progress openings as a result of China-US bilateral relations.

It was not immediately clear whether the two would discuss North Korea's latest thumb in the eye.

"They both could agree over the next six to 12 months to produce an agreement that would increase American access to China and encourage Chinese investment in the United States that would generate jobs", said Dr David Lampton at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington.
